In-Q-Tel made the undisclosed investment in Lingotek of Provo, Utah. Lingotek will use the money to further development of its translation tools and to expand into new markets, said Rob Vandenber, Lingotek’s vice president of sales and marketing. /img_icOhOM1BLHhESSwPoHAs_0.jpgNevada, USA (Union Democrat): Legal proceedings involving an Angels Camp woman charged with attempted murder have been delayed again by a belated request for a Spanish-language interpreter. Maria McCullough, 51, allegedly attacked Nora Canez, 58, with a sharp metal object March 28 in what investigators claim was a dispute over terms of employment for McCullough at a Mexican restaurant Canez was planning to open in Sonora. The executive order is the first uniform, citywide policy requiring agencies to provide assistance and translation in the languages most commonly spoken by New Yorkers with limited English proficiency. /img_mBNTojtjoTErfKcN2355_0.jpgNew York, USA (Smart Biz): Perhaps your goal is simply to broaden your existing customer base to include members of some of the largest immigrant populations who may or may not feel comfortable enough in English to use your shopping cart or read your testimonials. Whatever your ultimate goal, translating vital pages of copy into any one of the most popular modern languages (such as Spanish, French, Arabic, Japanese, and more), can bring a host of positive results. /img_mBNTojtjoTErfKcN2355_0.jpgLondon, UK (Times): Problems of translation are a hazard of international diplomacy. Only last month, the Indonesian President was quoted as criticising travel warnings issued by the Australian Government. The misstatement was promptly attributed to an inexperienced interpreter. Nouri al-Maliki, the Iraqi Prime Minister, has taken a similar route in the past 48 hours. In an interview with Der Spiegel, he appeared to endorse Senator Barack Obama's plan for a withdrawal of US forces from Iraq within 16 months. According to an Iraqi government spokesman, however, Mr al-Maliki's words were misunderstood and mistranslated. /img_9S7Xi6cKWyHK20dkZoB7_0.jpgWashington, USA (Medill reports): Pentagon officials want to increase and expand language and cultural training for U.S. servicemen and women. The brass is asking Congress for additional funds to do so. "I think it's a good thing," said Maj. Gerald Ostlund. The Army reservist was sent to Iraq in 2006 with 12 hours of Arabic lessons and six hours of cultural training. "There were [language] challenges that you would expect," he said. Ostlund was training Iraqi public affairs officers in the Department of Interior and Ministry of Defense. He relied on translators, manuals and online resources to bridge the communication gap.
